Summer vacation is almost over, but the summer heat and powerful sunshine is here to stay for a while. We've got some good news for your skin though ... there is more you can do to protect from sunburns than simply applying SPF. Loading up your plate with the right foods can actually help protect your skin from burning! Check out these healthy and simple foods that you should be loading up on during the summer.
TOMATOES: Because of the high lycopene content in tomatoes, especially the red ones, eating these little gems help your skin not to burn! One study showed that participants who ate 5 tablespoons of tomato paste daily for 3 months had 25% more protection from sunburns. HIgh levels of the antioxodent lycopene found in your skin even help it to look younger, preventing fine lines and wrinkles! So load up on tomato pasta sauce, chop some tomatoes to top your salad, or slice some up on your next sandwich. *Note that lycopene is most potent when tomatoes are in tomato paste form* A tomato a day keeps the sunburn away!
WATERMELON: Another food high in lycopene content. Lycopene is what gives certain foods their red or pink color, which is actually used in the fruit or vegetable itself as protection from the sun! Watermelon also has a high water content, which makes it not only a refreshing summer treat, but is easy on the waistline and helps with hydration. Though not as potent as tomatoes and tomato paste, endulging on watermelon during the summer is still a great idea!
PINK GRAPEFRUIT: See a pattern here? Pinks and reds! Lycopene to the rescue again. Pink grapefruit makes a delicious side to breakfast, but to absorb the most of it's helpful antioxidants you will need to combine it with a healthy fat (like almonds or avocados) because lycopene is fat-soluable. The same applys to any of the lycopene rich foods!
Most colorful fruits and vegetable will be beneficial to your skin's health, so be sure to load up all summer long! Paying special attention to bulk up on foods rich in lycopene will help you fight the burn this summer, but PLEASE remember to apply your sunscreen!
We hope you enjoy the rest of your summer, and remember the BEST way to avoid a sunburn is to avoid prolonged sun exposure and GET A SPRAY TAN!!
