It is official, wedding season in Arizona has arrived! Unlike the rest of the country, October through April brings amazing temperatures that make it perfect for a beautiful outdoor wedding. That means lots of wedding invitations for you, and lots of spray tan clients for us! We see hundreds of brides, bridesmaids, mothers of the bride, fathers of the bride, wedding guests, and even the occasional groomsman wanting to look good for his bud's bachelor party. Of all of these tanners, many of them make crucial planning mistakes on when to get their tan and how to care for it afterward! So read on to learn some valuable tips to get the best quality spray tan for this wedding season.
Wedding Tan DO'S:
SCHEDULE A TRIAL TAN: We are going to do everything we can to give you the very best tan possible! But we strongly encourage scheduling a "trial" tan a couple of weeks before the big day to ensure you will love how you look with a spray tan. It will take about 7 to 10 days for your tan to completely fade away, so plan your trial tan far enough in advance so you can scrub it completely off of your skin before having a new tan applied.
PLAN THE RIGHT TIME: The best day to get a spray tan is 1 to 3 days before the big day. Be sure to take into account rehearsal dinners - if you tan the same day as the rehearsal dinner you may not have time to shower before it starts, meaning you could get tanning bronzer on your nice clothing, smell like spray tan, or look very dark because you will still have tanning bronzer on you. If the wedding is on a Saturday, and the rehearsal is Friday night, then get your tan on Thursday (example). Also, after you get tanned you cannot shower for a minimum of 8 hours to receive the maximum color result. You cannot get wet, work out, shower, etc. for these 8 hours. So plan accordingly!
SCHEDULE NAIL AND WAXING APPOINTMENTS BEFORE YOUR TAN: If you get waxed after spray tanning, you WILL wax the tan off! And if you get a manicure or pedicure after spray tanning, any soaking or scrubbing of the hands/feet/legs will lighten or even remove your tan. So plan accordingly and get your spray tan last! Don't worry, the tanning solution will NOT stain your polished toes & fingers.
BRING LOOSE CLOTHES FOR AFTER YOUR TAN: After we apply your airbrush or spray tan, you will want to have loose fitting, dark clothing to wear afterward. Changing into very tight clothing immediately after your tan can cause the tan to lighten or even rub off. We suggest loose pants, shorts, dresses and tanks or tees for after your tan. Plan to wear this outfit up until your first shower at least 8 hours after you get your tan.
BE EARLY FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT AND TAKE YOUR TIME!: It is never a good idea to be in a rush when getting a spray tan - especially for an important event like a wedding! Book your appointment in advance, arrive approximately 5 minutes early, and plan to be in the salon anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes. This will allow optimal time for comfortable drying, and also will provide your tanning technician enough time to go through all post tan instructions with you thoroughly. It will also give you plenty of time to work with your tanning technician to choose the proper color and allow for a nice, pleasant and relaxed application!
Wedding Tan DON'TS:
PLAN TO WEAR WHITE THE SAME DAY YOU TAN: By this we mean DO NOT plan to go to a wedding gown fitting the same day that you spray tan! The tanning bronzer will get on your gown! After you have waited a minimum of 8 hours and taken a shower, then it is safe to put on your gown.
GET THE VERY FIRST TAN OF YOUR LIFE THE DAY BEFORE YOUR WEDDING: Although very rare, it is possible to have an adverse reaction to spray tan solution. We know it is great to be tan, and if you are feeling pale the day before your wedding then a spray tan is a quick fix. This is fine if you have used at home tanning products or spray tanned before and are confident you will react well to spray tan solution and like how you look with a spray tan. If you have NEVER had a sunless tan application, we do not recommend tanning the day before a wedding just INCASE you have an adverse reaction or don't like the way you look with a spray tan. Schedule a trial a couple weeks in advance so you can be sure you love it!
SCHEDULE A MASSAGE AFTER YOUR TAN: After we apply your spray tan, you cannot get wet for a minimum of 8 hours - this includes lotion and oils touching your skin! After you have taken your first shower, you will want to apply generous amounts of lotion, but you will want to avoid all essential oils as they will break down your tan. Many masseuses use oil when they massage you - this will cause your tan to break down! If you MUST get a massage, ask them to use lotion, not oil. But we recommend avoiding the massage until after the wedding is over.
BE NERVOUS: There is nothing to worry about! If you follow all of our pre and post tan instructions, your tan is going to look great. So relax, have a glass of champagne, and enjoy the experience!
